About fitted wardrobes in EC1N
Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and not enough hanging space.
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What goes into your quote
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes across EC1N: local notes
From Blackfriars and Temple Bar to the quieter streets, bedrooms across EC1N range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
About 32% of the homes in EC1N went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. A quarter or more of the homes in EC1N (about 28%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall. A quarter or more of the homes in the EC1N postcode district (about 25%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Blackfriars: The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.2 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Apothecaries Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
What it is made from
Hanging rails
A long rail needs a support in the middle when it carries winter coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Looking after your furniture
People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Don’t pack clothes tight against the back panel. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Is bespoke worth it?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The overall size of the piece
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you’re after
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Do you work outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.
