Need wall beds in Woodford Wells?

FAQs: wall beds in Woodford Wells

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Highams Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Woodford Wells?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

That depends on the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

About our wall beds in Woodford Wells

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go when the bed is down. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a hobby room with a bed for guests and a studio that works by day and night.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Woodford Wells, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Advice on your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

Do you need wall beds in Woodford Wells?

The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

If you live in a flat close to Highams Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Close to The Highams Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a period home close to All Saints' Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.
