Making use of tricky spaces in Woodford Wells
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Woodford Wells were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Woodford Wells. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Redbridge included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Woodford Wells. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Saints', original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Highams Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Woodford Wells
In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Woodford Wells, we note what’s there and design around it. People usually come to us about no room for a small desk or a place to work and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Woodford Wells, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Under-stairs cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Why bespoke in Woodford Wells?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
- A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
If your children go to Wells Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will the quote be in writing?
Your questions about under-stairs storage in Woodford Wells
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Highams Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Woodford Wells?
Yes, Woodford Wells is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. At the design visit we’ll say whether a desk makes sense there. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
