Wall beds for your home in South Woodford
How we make wall beds for South Woodford
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a study that doubles as a spare room and a living room with a bed that folds away.
Fitted furniture in a bedroom has to work with how you use the room. In South Woodford, as anywhere in London, we start by asking what the room is for. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Where other trades come in
Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Electrical work for reading lights
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it’s made from
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
- We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Tell us about parking near your home

Wall beds in South Woodford: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Woodford were built before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The George Lane Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of South Woodford. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. All of London, Redbridge included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in South Woodford is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Close to The Highams Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For a flat near Wood Street station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Valentines Mansion, about 2.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
South Woodford is part of the London Borough of Redbridge, about 1 mile north of Woodford. We can visit homes in South Woodford on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Across Redbridge, we cover South Woodford and the places around it.
In E18, IG8 and E11, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Common questions about wall beds
Does a conservation area in or near South Woodford affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make wall beds for a home in South Woodford?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and South Woodford is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How are wall beds priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What affects the cost of wall beds
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How big the furniture is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you get in touch:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you are after
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
