About our wall beds in Monkhams

The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We will talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a home office that also sleeps guests.

Around Monkhams, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Monkhams is in the Woodford Wells Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 33% of homes in the streets around Monkhams were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.

For a flat near Highams Park station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to The Highams Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For a family home near Wells Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Common questions about wall beds

I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Monkhams?

Yes. Monkhams is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How are wall beds priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits during the design visit so you can choose one that works.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
