Wall beds in Loxford
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Typical reasons to get in touch are a guest room that sits empty most of the time and a playroom that can sleep visitors, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. For any home in Loxford, those are the first things we note at the design visit, and fitted furniture is planned around them. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Looking after your furniture
People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Make sure the floor in front is clear before the bed comes down, and do not let children play with it.
Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Is bespoke worth it?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

How fitting works for wall beds
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Bedrooms in Loxford: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Loxford were built before 1919 (about 39%) and since 2000 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Loxford, Historic England’s list includes Barking Station Booking Hall (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Redbridge is no exception. If your road in Loxford falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.
Close to Loxford Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. For families living near Woodlands Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Eastbury Manor House, about 1.2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions from Loxford
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Loxford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Loxford?
Yes, we work across Redbridge, Loxford included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
How much does a wall bed cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
The moisture-resistant grade suits cabinets on cooler external walls, alongside good ventilation.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.
