Is bespoke worth it?
Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. We can build to the full height and width and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Wall beds for homes in Woodford Bridge
You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. If your home has a study that doubles as a spare room and storage built around a fold-down bed, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Woodford Bridge, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You tell us about the room.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
- A written quote follows.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Woodford Bridge
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 49% of the housing in the streets around Woodford Bridge, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Woodford Bridge, Historic England’s list includes Gwynne House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Stables East of Gwynne House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Redbridge are set locally. Where a street in Woodford Bridge is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.
For an older house near Church of St Paul, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Close to Linder's Field? Wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What it is made from
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a traditional finish in a period room.
Is it time for wall beds?
Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- A home office that also sleeps guests

Choosing a carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Questions from Woodford Bridge
I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Woodford Bridge?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How much time does fitting need?
Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you will know before we start.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
How much space does a wall bed need?
You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We measure this during the design visit and plan the layout around it.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
