Window seats in Aldgate, City of London

In Aldgate, we design window seats around the room you actually have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books

What affects the cost of window seats

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How square the room is
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

About our window seats in Aldgate

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the whole wall looks considered. It is worth talking through during the design visit in Aldgate. If you’re living with nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, that is what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Aldgate, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Make room so the whole bay can be measured
  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. If anything isn’t right with the seat, drop us a line using the contact form and we will talk it through.

Use a step rather than standing on the seat. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. It will look better for longer with a little care.

When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Aldgate homes and window seats

In the streets around Aldgate, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 48%) and before 1919 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aldgate include Church of St Katherine Cree (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Church of St Botolph (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Aldgate (about 48%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so the fixings for window seats are chosen for the board.

Living in a block of flats near London Fenchurch Street station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Finsbury Circus? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near The Aldgate School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

How fitting works for window seats

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Making the seat cushion, which is not our work
  • Work on the window frame or glass

FAQs: window seats in Aldgate

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Aldgate?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

My home in Aldgate is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

How much does a window seat cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a written quote.
