Fitted wardrobes across EC2A: what to expect

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere proper to go and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

What goes into your quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Near you in Barbican Estate

Our area takes in the homes around St Giles-without-Cripplegate, Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre and Barts Health Archives. Other local landmarks include Barbican Conservatory (within half a mile north), Charterhouse Square School (less than half a mile north-west), The Jugged Hare pub (a few minutes’ walk north-east) and St Mary-at-Hill (0.8 miles south-east). Barbican Estate has its own railway station: Moorgate station. Well-known places in the area include Montfichet's Tower (0.5 miles south-west) and Gabriel's Wharf (1 mile south-west). Not far away are Ludgate Hill.

Bedroom storage across EC2A

In EC2A, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 40% of the housing in the EC2A postcode district, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 40% of homes in EC2A were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 82% of households in the EC2A postcode district live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in EC2A ahead of fitting day.

Barbican Estate: If your home is one of the older houses near St Giles-without-Cripplegate, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Mansion House, about 0.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in EC2A

An tricky room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do you work in EC2A?

Yes. We cover EC2A and the rest of the City of London, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How do I get started?

Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
