St George in the East homes and window seats

About 37% of the homes in the area around St George in the East went up since 2000, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of St George in the East is within about a quarter of a mile of the St George in the East Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the area around St George in the East (about 37%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so window seats are designed with fixings to suit.

If you live near William Curtis Ecological Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 1.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

About our window seats in St George in the East

Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We’ll look at your radiator during the design visit in St George in the East. If you’re living with looking for a reading spot by the window and a child’s room that needs storage and seating, window seats made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large number of homes around St George in the East date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

If you only want a simple bench under a straight window, an off-the-shelf piece may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense when the window is a bay, there’s a radiator below, or you want storage built in. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your window. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What you get with us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Questions from St George in the East

Is St George in the East in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. St George in the East is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Shadwell station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The seat is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

How is a window seat priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished seat is MDF.

How we price window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote for window seats in St George in the East, use our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it is useful to sort them out beforehand. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
  2. We visit to measure the window and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
