How we make window seats for Motspur Park
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there is a cushion on top. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. People usually come to us about standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Motspur Park, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the window seat we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

Before we arrive

Advice
Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Consider adding shelving around the seat
Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will help.
Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.
Why bespoke in Motspur Park?
Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Put in front of one, they can trap the heat. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Neighbourhoods near Motspur Park
What else we make in Motspur Park
Storage in Motspur Park homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Motspur Park were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Motspur Park, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Oak Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Coombe Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 46% of households in the neighbourhood around Motspur Park, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 0.8 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If you live near Beverley Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For a family home near St Matthew's CofE Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Where other trades come in
Not everything around window seats is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Fixing the window itself
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Common questions about window seats
Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Motspur Park?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Motspur Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
What does a bespoke window seat cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?
Many seats use both. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
