About our loft storage in Forty Hill

A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it is low. It uses the full height of the room. The design visit in Forty Hill is where we work it out. Most enquiries start with a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and seasonal things cluttering the loft room; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Forty Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Storage in Forty Hill homes: local notes

About 43% of the homes in the area around Forty Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 21 entries within half a mile of the centre of Forty Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Forty Hill, let us know at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For families living near Worcesters Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Near listed buildings like Forty Hall, less than half a mile north of the centre of Forty Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Arranging a design visit

Advice

Questions from Forty Hill

Does a conservation area in or near Forty Hill affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Turkey Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Why people ask for loft storage in Forty Hill

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

If you live near Enfield Town Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Altering the structure of the loft

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

In a loft room, walls, slopes and floors are rarely straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
