Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

About our fitted wardrobes in Hanworth

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. If you’re living with wasted space beside the chimney breast and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Internal walls in post-war homes can be lightweight partitions rather than solid block, and tall furniture stands on the floor, tied back where the wall is strong enough. Because many homes around Hanworth date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, each wall is checked before anything is designed. Nothing heavy relies on a thin wall alone.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Hanworth

Does a conservation area in or near Hanworth affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Hanworth?

Yes, Hanworth is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Too little room for clothes

If your children go to Buckingham Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How parking will work on your street

Fitted wardrobes in Hanworth: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hanworth were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Hanworth is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hanworth Road Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Hanworth, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Crane Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
