Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Hanworth
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hanworth
A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, so it follows the walls and sits level. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a built-in dressing table and a dressing area in part of a bedroom.
Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, so storage typically goes on the walls beside or opposite. Many homes around Hanworth were built in the post-war decades, so it is a layout worth planning for. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.
- We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made and finished in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for drawers and long shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Hanging rails
Two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Damp treatment or repairs
- Making good walls and ceilings
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hanworth
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hanworth?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Hanworth?
Yes, Hanworth is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?
There is no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through at the design visit.
Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Hanworth
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How big the furniture is
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
Hanworth homes and walk-in wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hanworth were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Hanworth is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hanworth Road Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 35% of homes in the streets around Hanworth were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If your children go to Buckingham Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Close to Crane Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
