Window seats in Ickenham

Window seats for homes in Ickenham

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Bookshelves either side of a window, with a seat between, make a quiet place to read. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the whole wall looks considered. We can go through the options when we visit in Ickenham. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and needing more storage in the room.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Ickenham, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ruislip station?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Ickenham?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

The problems window seats solve

Storage is another big reason. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage in a space you’re not otherwise using.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • No space for toys and games

Ickenham Hall, about 0.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Why bespoke in Ickenham?

Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why us?

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • We work across all London boroughs

Window seats in Ickenham: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Ickenham, with about 35% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Part of Ickenham is in the Ickenham Village Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Ickenham (about 39%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war homes often have wide windows with radiators below, and a seat over a radiator needs a grille so the heat still reaches the room.

Near listed buildings like Outbuildings to North of Swakeleys, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Ickenham, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near West Ruislip station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side

Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is usually all it needs. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and describe what’s happening.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode

To get a quote for window seats in Ickenham, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough measurements. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.
