About window seats in Hillingdon

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there is a cushion on top. At the design visit in Hillingdon, we’ll help you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are a bay with no furniture that fits and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

What goes into your quote

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Window seats across Hillingdon: local notes

Across Hillingdon, the most useful storage is often hidden in an awkward corner. Window seats can follow the slope of a staircase or a ceiling, or the line of a bay. Each piece is fitted to the room as it is.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 37% of homes in Hillingdon date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have bay windows, natural places for a window seat. A quarter or more of the homes in Hillingdon (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Windows in homes of that era are often wide, with a radiator underneath, and a seat over a radiator needs a grille so the heat still reaches the room.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Hillingdon included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and talk through the design.

Ruislip: Near listed buildings like Lady Bankes School, under half a mile south of the centre of Ruislip, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Church Field Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you only want a simple bench under a straight window, an off-the-shelf piece may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense when the window is a bay, there’s a radiator below, or you want storage built in. We’re happy to give an honest view at the design visit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

What affects the cost of window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Note whether your window has working shutters

Once the seat is fitted, it is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Don’t block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Questions from Hillingdon

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We’ll suggest a layout at the measuring visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

How is a window seat priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a written quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
