West Drayton Window Seats
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in West Drayton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage

Making use of awkward spaces in West Drayton
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around West Drayton, with about 25% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 35 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Drayton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and window seats can be designed to work around them. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Hillingdon sets its own rules. If your street in West Drayton is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
For a family home near West Drayton Academy, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Near listed buildings like Church of St Martin, under half a mile north-west of the centre of West Drayton, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
West Drayton is about 6 miles north-east of Ruislip, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. West Drayton is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. West Drayton is one of 17 places on our list for Hillingdon.

Window seats in West Drayton
Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It’s a job that suits bespoke work, in West Drayton or anywhere else. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books.
Many homes around West Drayton date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. Post-war houses typically have space under the stairs that can do more, while in a flat, the hallway and any recess are the places to look. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

FAQs: window seats in West Drayton
Do you cover homes near West Drayton station?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in West Drayton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that don’t mind that.
How fitting works for window seats
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
- On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Empty the space we will be working in
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Getting a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Check whether there is a radiator under the window
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often wipe off with a damp cloth.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe what’s happening.

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
What affects the price in West Drayton
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How many doors and drawers there are
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
What to send when you get in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Examples of the look you are after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
Is it time for window seats?
The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It gives you a place to sit in the light.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- Needing more storage in the room
- Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
