  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Window seats in Ruislip Manor: what you get

Each window seat is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Ruislip Manor and fitted. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting a quiet place to read and a bay with no furniture that fits.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Ruislip Manor, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know about the radiator before we visit
  • Think about what you will store under the seat
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit

Once the seat is fitted, it is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. It will look better for longer with a little care.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Common questions about window seats

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ruislip Manor?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ruislip station?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. Space is left around the radiator too. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Window seats in Ruislip Manor: local notes

About 60% of the homes in the area around Ruislip Manor went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Manor. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 30% of households in the neighbourhood around Ruislip Manor live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Bay and sash windows are common in London terraces, and suit a window seat.

If you live near Church Field Gardens, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For an older house near Church of St Paul, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. For families living near Lady Bankes Infant School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the seat is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
