Need window seats in Hillingdon?
What prompts window seats in Hillingdon
Some people want a reading spot. A seat by the window, with books nearby, makes a natural reading corner. It is often the most-used seat in the house.
We’re often asked to help with:
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- Unused space below a sash window
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- A bay window that is hard to furnish
If you live in a flat close to West Drayton station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- How parking will work on your street
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Window seats for homes in Hillingdon
Lots of period homes across London have sash windows. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. If the window has shutters, the seat is planned so they can still open fully. We check all of this at the measuring visit in Hillingdon. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about toys spread across a bedroom floor and needing more storage in the room.
Around Hillingdon, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
How fitting works for window seats
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
- We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
How to get a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
FAQs: window seats in Hillingdon
Do you make window seats for homes in Hillingdon?
Yes, Hillingdon is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Drayton station?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
How is a window seat priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.
How we price window seats
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Spray painting or hand painting
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
What else we make in Hillingdon
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Window seats in Hillingdon: local notes
In the streets around Hillingdon, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Hillingdon, Historic England’s list includes Cedars House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and Church of St John (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Ickenham Hall, about 1.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.
