Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Let us know about the radiator before we visit
- Think about what you’ll store under the seat
- Choose a colour that suits the room
Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.
Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that don’t mind it.
Window seats in Rush Green: what you get
We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Rush Green. People usually come to us about wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a radiator under the window getting in the way, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Rush Green, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Lift-up lids
Lift-up lids are a simple way to add storage under a seat. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it’s best for occasional storage.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Plastering and decorating around the seat
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
- Work on the window frame or glass
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Rush Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Is Rush Green in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes, Rush Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Which materials go into your window seats?
Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot by a window, where condensation can form. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
How much does a window seat cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
