Wall beds for homes in Rush Green

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so the mattress you choose fits. People normally come to us about shelves or a desk around the bed and a bed that fills a little-used room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Rush Green, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it is a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Rush Green homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Rush Green were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and since 2000 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Rush Green include Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Rush Green, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Hare Hall, about 2.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live near Harrow Lodge Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Living in a block of flats near Romford station? Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

What we do not do

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Decorating around the cabinet

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Questions from Rush Green

Is parking a problem for fitting in Rush Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Rush Green in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Rush Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Is a wall bed safe?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
