Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Built-in bookshelves in Rush Green

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Rush Green, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. Typical reasons to get in touch are bare walls that could hold shelving and shelves packed two rows deep; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Rush Green, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks on it are simple to touch up, and it suits a traditional room.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Built-in bookshelves in Rush Green: local notes

In the streets around Rush Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Rush Green, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Do you cover homes near Romford station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Yes. Rush Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
