What it’s made from

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring everything into view. They’re often easier for children than a lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It forms most of the visible parts.

Window seats in Russell Hill

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Russell Hill. If you’re living with a radiator under the window getting in the way and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Russell Hill were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Questions from Russell Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Russell Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Waddon station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you don’t have to move the cushion.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece

When we have finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Related advice

Do you need window seats in Russell Hill?

A window seat fits well with the sash windows and bays of many older houses. Painted to suit the room, it can sit with the original features. That appeals to people restoring or updating an older home.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Needing more storage in the room
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Airport House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Making use of tricky spaces in Russell Hill

About 40% of the homes in the area around Russell Hill went up since 2000, and about 27% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Russell Hill is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Sutton included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Russell Hill is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St. Paul's, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. For families living near Wallington Primary Academy, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
