Loft storage for your home in Russell Hill
How we make loft storage for Russell Hill
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Russell Hill, we’ll look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are wasted space behind the knee walls and boxes piled on loft boards.
Many homes around Russell Hill were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. They’re cut to follow the angle of the ceiling.
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.
Making use of tricky spaces in Russell Hill
Homes built since 2000 make up about 40% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Russell Hill, with about 27% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Russell Hill is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 40% of homes around Russell Hill were built since 2000, well above the figure for Sutton as a whole, about 13%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.
For an older house near St. Paul's, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. For a flat near Waddon station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Duppas Hill? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How big the furniture is
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What we need to know
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Ask for a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Questions from Russell Hill
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Russell Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Russell Hill affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How is loft storage priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.
