About our walk-in wardrobes in Russell Hill
Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about somewhere to sit and get ready and room for two wardrobes in one space.
Many homes around Russell Hill were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the tricky corners. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?
Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.
Walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- Shelves for shoes and bags
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Airport House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How parking will work on your street
From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
- A written quote follows.
- We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
- Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Advice
Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
Questions from Russell Hill
I live near Waddon station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Russell Hill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?
Yes, it helps avoid condensation and mould. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Walk-in wardrobes in Russell Hill: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the area around Russell Hill went up since 2000, and about 27% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Russell Hill is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Russell Hill is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your children go to Wallington Primary Academy or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live near Duppas Hill, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Plan shoe storage around what you own
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Think about long versus double hanging
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. A seasonal tidy keeps it working well.
It’s useful to know what you’ll keep before we measure. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so a clear-out first gives a better design.
