Whitton Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Whitton, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Tall larder storage
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen

Bespoke kitchens in Whitton: what you get

We make kitchens to fit the room, not a catalogue of set sizes. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken at the measuring visit, so there are no filler panels covering tricky gaps. The layout, storage and finish are planned with you, and the kitchen is made at our workshop before it is fitted. People typically come to us about a kitchen finished in your colours and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Knocked-through kitchen-diners in older semis sometimes keep a chimney breast, and the recesses beside it can take a dresser or larder. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Whitton, the design can make the most of it. Any capped chimney stays ventilated.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Whitton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Is Whitton in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. Whitton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Yes, where there’s space. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • New sockets or circuits
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Any work on the gas supply

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

People also want a kitchen that is built to last and can be repainted, which appeals if you are staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • Extra cupboard space
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen

If your children go to Royal Military School of Music or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Check there’s room around an island before planning one
  • Mention any parking or lift rules

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly around the sink and dishwasher. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.
