How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
- A written quote follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
Window seats in Ivybridge: what you get
In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. If your home has a bay window that’s hard to furnish and looking for a reading spot by the window, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Ivybridge, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Honest limits
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
- Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Your questions about window seats in Ivybridge
Is Ivybridge in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and Ivybridge is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near Twickenham station?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
Which materials go into your window seats?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Windows can run with condensation in winter, so a moisture-resistant grade of MDF makes sense. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and it stays stable once fitted.
What affects the cost of window seats
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The overall size of the piece
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Your postcode and the borough
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
