About our TV and media units in Blackwall

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. If your home has bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and somewhere to keep games tidy, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large number of homes around Blackwall date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes tend to have open-plan living rooms with no chimney breast. So TV and media units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a written quote for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, and no single shelf overloaded.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes. Fronts are painted to match the unit.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

TV and media units for homes in Blackwall

Homes built since 2000 make up about 80% of the housing in the area around Blackwall, with about 11% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Blackwall, Historic England’s list includes Balfron Tower (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Blackwall. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Blackwall is about 3 miles west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Wherever you are in Blackwall, it works the same way: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. In Tower Hamlets, Blackwall is one of the places we cover.

Every address in E14, SE10 and E16 is within our area for TV and media units. Streets in the area include Nutmeg Lane, Athol Square and Leamouth Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Blackwall sits close to the A102 and A1206. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Blackwall?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Blackwall?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Blackwall included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them.

What prompts TV and media units in Blackwall

A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. A unit around it puts it in proportion.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Nowhere good for speakers
