Wall beds in Blackwall
How we make wall beds for Blackwall
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that’s also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. If you are living with a home office that also sleeps guests and a hobby room with a bed for guests, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Around Blackwall, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What wall beds can’t fix
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
- Decorating around the cabinet
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Shelves or a desk alongside
Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Bed mechanism housing
A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so we build it with care. It’s fixed to a sound wall or floor.
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek front, spray painting works well and is finished before it reaches you.
Questions from Blackwall
My home in Blackwall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Blackwall?
Yes. Blackwall is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Is a wall bed safe?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it at the measuring visit.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Blackwall
About 80% of the homes in the area around Blackwall went up since 2000, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Blackwall include Balfron Tower (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Blackwall. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Canary Wharf station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Bow Creek Ecology Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
