Common questions about alcove units

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Canons Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry. If there is damp on the breast already, it’s best sorted before fitting.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are built in our workshop first, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

About our alcove units in Canons Park

We work across London, including Canons Park. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and talk through the design. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you’re happy the units are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. People usually come to us about units that sit well with original features and everyday clutter left on show; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Canons Park, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Do you need alcove units in Canons Park?

A move into an older home is a common reason. New owners want storage that suits the house, and the alcoves are the natural place for it. It is also a good moment, before the room fills up.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Alcoves that are not square
  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Shelving for books and records

If you live near Edgwarebury Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

How fitting works for alcove units

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It helps to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We then send a written quote for the units.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Living-room storage in Canons Park

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 54% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Canons Park, with about 21% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Canons Park is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 55% of households in the neighbourhood around Canons Park live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a family home near Camrose Primary With Nursery, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For an older house near Church of St Lawrence, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets

Load the shelves evenly rather than piling weight in the middle. A full shelf of books is heavier than it looks, and an even load keeps the shelves straight.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.
