How we make alcove units for Chingford

We work across London, including Chingford. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a quote in writing; the units are then made in our workshop and fitted in your home. People normally come to us about units that sit well with original features and shelving for books and records, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Chingford, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Pricing alcove units in Chingford

The price for your room depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking and unloading on your street

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Chingford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Chingford station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. Height and depth are agreed with you.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.

Do you move sockets for alcove units?

We do not do electrical work. If you want sockets moved or added, your electrician should do that before we fit. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.

When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with some details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Alcove units for homes in Chingford

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chingford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 51%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chingford include Church of All Saints (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Waltham Forest is no exception. If your road in Chingford falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

For a flat near Chingford station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For an older house near All Saints' Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

What prompts alcove units in Chingford

Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. Starting again lets you rethink the layout, from the shelf heights to the doors.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • A place for a small desk

If your children go to Parkside Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
