Alcove units in Walthamstow, Waltham Forest
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on alcove units in Walthamstow starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- A desk that tucks into an alcove

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are standard units leaving gaps at the sides and bowed walls and sloping floors.
With a large share of homes around Walthamstow built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Alcove units in Walthamstow: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Walthamstow, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Walthamstow. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 34% of households in the streets around Walthamstow live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit alcove units built to their exact widths.
If your children go to Greenleaf Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Near listed buildings like ABC Cinema, less than half a mile east of the centre of Walthamstow, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
Walthamstow is part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. We can visit homes in Walthamstow on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our Waltham Forest coverage includes Walthamstow, along with the rest of the borough.
Every home in E17, E4, IG8 and E10 is within our area for alcove units. Our area takes in homes on streets such as High Street, Church Road and Wigram Square, along with the roads around them, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Walthamstow include the A104 and A112. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Walthamstow, we also cover Walthamstow Village (1 mile south-east), Warner Estate (1 mile north), Bakers Arms (1 mile south-east), Higham Hill (1 mile north-west) and Upper Walthamstow (1 mile east). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Leyton (2 miles south-east), Chingford (3 miles north), Leytonstone (2 miles south-east), Holloway Down (3 miles south-east), Bushwood Area of Leytonstone (2 miles south-east) and Hale End (2 miles north-east). Around Walthamstow
Our area takes in the homes around Mirth pub, Walthamstow School for Girls and Aveling Park School. There’s a railway station in Walthamstow itself: Walthamstow Central station. A little further out are 17 & Central (a few minutes’ walk south) and Walthamstow Pump House Museum (0.8 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Hollow Pond.
Is it time for alcove units?
A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, post and chargers all need a home, and cupboards with doors keep them out of sight. Open shelves above are left for the things you like to see.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
- Cupboards in keeping with an older house
- Alcoves that are wasted space
For an older house near Church of St Michael and All Angels, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Boards, parts and paint
Shelves
Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets the colour be judged in the room itself. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
Your questions about alcove units in Walthamstow
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Walthamstow?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Walthamstow?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Alcove units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. You can have a desk in one alcove and cupboards in the other. The desk is planned around the way you work.
Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?
Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. Ideally it is done before fitting, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking near your home
- The internal fittings
- How many doors and drawers there are
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. It helps to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- We then send a quote in writing for the units.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
