Alcove Units in Leyton

In Leyton, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. Your alcove unit is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

The problems alcove units solve

A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, post and chargers all need a home, and closed cupboards hide them away. Open shelves above are left for the things you like to see.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Everyday clutter left on show

If you live in a period home close to Christian Hope Ministries International, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

About our alcove units in Leyton

Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, while the shelves hold books and the things you want on show. The cupboard top gives you a ledge for a lamp, a speaker or a plant. We set the heights to suit the room and what you will store. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves that are wasted space and a desk that tucks into an alcove.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room usually keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Leyton, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that’s a common starting point. Alcove units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What affects the price in Leyton

The price for your room depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player

Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to bring a door back in line, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.

If a damp patch appears near a unit, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Near listed buildings like Walnut Tree House, under half a mile west of the centre of Leyton, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Leyton Jubilee Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Leyton Midland Road station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Leyton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Leyton?

Simply send us a few details through our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away.
