Alcove units for homes in South Chingford

We work across London, including South Chingford. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and discuss the design. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and cupboards in keeping with an older house.

Around South Chingford, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for alcove units

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a quote in writing.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Meridian Water station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Chingford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Do both alcove units have to match?

That depends on how you use the room. Alcoves are often different widths anyway, so each unit is made for its own recess. They can share a style while doing different things.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. The height is settled at the design visit.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away.

Alcove units for homes in South Chingford

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 61% of the housing in the streets around South Chingford, with about 12% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Chingford include Church of St Edmund (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 42% of households in the neighbourhood around South Chingford live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and alcove units are made to those widths.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For families living near Chingford Hall Primary Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Lloyd Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the units arrive already finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF doesn’t have a grain to show through the paint, so a painted finish looks even and calm. We choose the moisture-resistant grade for fitted furniture.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
  • Have any damp looked at before the units are made
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store

Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in, even when the cupboards fill up. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away.

If a damp patch appears near a unit, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.

How we price alcove units

The price for your room depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Examples of the look you’re after

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, using birch plywood where strength matters. That said, if you are renting or moving soon, a good off-the-shelf unit may make more sense. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
