- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
Ask about alcove units in Lambeth
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Alcove units for homes in Lambeth
A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help keep damp out of the breast. We keep any vent clear when we design alcove units, with nothing covering it. If there are signs of damp on the chimney breast or in the alcoves, they’re best sorted before fitting, as cupboards fitted over damp walls can suffer. If your home has alcoves that are wasted space and space for a growing book collection, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around Lambeth many homes date from those years. Alcove units can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the alcove unit we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, talk through the design and check the route from the street to the room. It helps to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- We then send a quote in writing for the units.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Getting a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Advice
Questions from Lambeth
Is parking a problem for fitting in Lambeth?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Is Lambeth in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, Lambeth is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Lambeth?
Just tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That is your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
How tall should alcove units be?
That’s your choice. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We go through the options at the measuring visit.

What prompts alcove units in Lambeth
A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and cupboards with doors keep them out of sight. The shelves above can then stay tidy.
Alcove units can help with:
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
If you live in a flat close to Vauxhall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether they measure the room themselves
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- How big the furniture is
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Living-room storage in Lambeth
In the area around Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lambeth. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 78% of households around Lambeth live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 52%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.
Lambeth is in the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. We cover Lambeth as part of our work across the rest of London. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Streets in the area include Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for alcove units. Lambeth sits close to the A3203 and A3204, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Green spaces nearby include St. James's Park Lake.
Why bespoke in Lambeth?
To be fair, a standalone bookcase or cabinet can go with you to your next home. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and are left behind when you go. It depends on how long you expect to stay. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
