Alcove Units in Vauxhall

In Vauxhall, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units

Alcove units in Vauxhall

Why people ask for alcove units in Vauxhall

Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, so there are gaps at the sides and the top. A fitted unit fills the recess up to the ceiling if you want.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Alcoves that are not square
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house

Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Alcove units for homes in Vauxhall

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. Typical reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and shelving for books and records; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and many homes around Vauxhall were built in that time. Alcove units can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Alcove units in Vauxhall: local notes

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Vauxhall went up since 2000, and about 21% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 201 entries within half a mile of the centre of Vauxhall. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand.

If you live near Old Paradise Gardens, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Near listed buildings like Woodstock Court, under half a mile east of the centre of Vauxhall, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Vauxhall is in the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. From period terraces to newer flats in Vauxhall, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Lambeth, Vauxhall is one of the places we cover.

Every home in SE11, SW1P and SW8 is within our area for alcove units, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street like Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for alcove units. The A3203 and A3204 runs close to Vauxhall; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. We also cover the places around Vauxhall: Lambeth (1 mile north), Kennington (1 mile south), Oval (1 mile south), Newington Butts (1 mile east) and St George's Fields (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Lambeth, our area takes in Stockwell (2 miles south), Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), Clapham (2 miles south-west), Brixton (2 miles south) and Loughborough Junction (2 miles south-east).

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You contact us with some details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square, then talk through the design with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Advice

Your questions about alcove units in Vauxhall

Can you make alcove units for a home in Vauxhall?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Vauxhall is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What affects the price of alcove units?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. The height is settled during the design visit.
