Under-stairs storage for your home in Elephant and Castle

Elephant and Castle homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Elephant and Castle were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Elephant and Castle is within about a quarter of a mile of the Eliot's Row Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Elephant and Castle fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Elephant & Castle station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St George the Martyr, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Under-stairs storage in Elephant and Castle

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Elephant and Castle and fitted. If you are living with open space under the stairs that collects clutter and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Elephant and Castle were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. It is carried out in the workshop for a smooth, even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Why bespoke in Elephant and Castle?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Related advice

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It is a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

Close to Newington Gardens? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Questions from Elephant and Castle

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Elephant and Castle?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Elephant and Castle?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Elephant and Castle?

Yes. We work in Elephant and Castle and across Southwark, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it looks like part of the house.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.
