How we make built-in bookshelves for Elephant and Castle

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. Most enquiries start with bare walls that could hold shelving and bookshelves in keeping with an older house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Internal walls in newer homes are typically plasterboard on metal or timber studs, and the board alone is not meant for heavy loads. That matters around Elephant and Castle, as many homes there date from 2000 onwards: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live in a flat in Elephant and Castle. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Elephant and Castle affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall into sound structure. Where a wall cannot take the load, we will say so.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It is possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

Built-in living-room furniture in Elephant and Castle

In the streets around Elephant and Castle, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Elephant and Castle include Church of St George the Martyr (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-east, and Charlotte Sharman School (Grade II), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Elephant and Castle normally needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

For a flat near Elephant & Castle station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Metropolitan Tabernacle, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
