Elephant and Castle TV and Media Units
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Elephant and Castle starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Nowhere good for speakers
- A cabinet that traps heat
- A tangle of wires behind the TV

TV and media units in Elephant and Castle
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If you are living with a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and a big screen that dominates the wall, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Newer homes often come with a TV point and sockets on one wall but nothing built around them. A good number of homes around Elephant and Castle went up since 2000, so TV and media units are typically designed around what’s already there. Any new socket is a job for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Elephant and Castle homes and TV and media units
Homes built since 2000 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Elephant and Castle, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Elephant and Castle, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance.
For families living near London College of Communication, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Near listed buildings like Church of St George the Martyr, about 0.6 miles north-east of the centre of Elephant and Castle, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Elephant and Castle is in the London Borough of Southwark, about 2 miles south of East Dulwich. Homes in Elephant and Castle are part of the area we cover for TV and media units, as part of our work in every London borough. Elephant and Castle is one of 21 places on our list for Southwark.
Every address in SE1, SE17 and SE11 is covered for TV and media units. If your home is on a street like Dante Road, Oakey Lane and Ash Avenue, or close by, we can visit to measure up for TV and media units. Elephant and Castle sits close to the A300 and A302. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Elephant and Castle include Newington Butts (1 mile south), St George's Fields (1 mile north-west), Vauxhall (1 mile west), Lambeth (1 mile west) and Kennington (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Southwark we cover include East Dulwich (2 miles south), Herne Hill (3 miles south), Camberwell (2 miles south), Peckham (2 miles south-east), Rotherhithe (3 miles east) and Surrey Quays (2 miles east). As one of the bigger places in Southwark, Elephant and Castle is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

The streets we cover here include those near St Jude's Church of England Primary School, Lambeth Palace Library and The Rockingham Arms and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Elephant and Castle itself: Elephant & Castle station. Nearby you’ll also find The Walworth Clinic (within half a mile south-east) and Newport Street Gallery (0.7 miles west). For a walk, there is Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.
Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
- A quote in writing follows for the unit.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
Getting a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Is it time for TV and media units?
Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Leads that show from every angle
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
If you live in a period home close to Metropolitan Tabernacle, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Choosing a carpenter

- How they handle walls that are not straight
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How parking will work on your street
What it’s made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface that suits a modern TV wall.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.
When is bespoke worth it?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where other trades come in
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Configuring the TV and sound system
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: TV and media units in Elephant and Castle
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Elephant and Castle?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Elephant and Castle?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
