Alcove units in Oval
Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, and in a dining room a home for china and glass. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and space for a growing book collection.
Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Oval, alcove units are designed in sections from the start, with the route in measured along with the room itself. The joins are placed where they will not show once the furniture is fitted.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Alcove units for homes in Oval
In the neighbourhood around Oval, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Oval is in the Vauxhall Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 69% of households in the streets around Oval live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
For an older house near Calvary Church of God in Christ, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a family home near St Stephen's Church of England Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Where other trades come in
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

Your questions about alcove units in Oval
My home in Oval is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Oval?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
How do I get a quote?
Simply drop us a line using the contact form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.
How it is made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books over a wider alcove. We size the shelf for the span and the load.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing means trimming the edges on site so they follow the wall. It’s how a straight unit meets a wall that isn’t straight.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
- Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
- Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
Load the shelves evenly rather than piling weight in the middle. A full shelf of books is heavier than it looks, and an even load keeps the shelves straight.
Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured not just the room: alcove units are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, talk through the design and check the route from the street to the room.
- We then send a written quote for the units.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
