Wall beds in Enfield Highway

Our wall beds are made for homes in Enfield Highway and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a home office that also sleeps guests and a playroom that can sleep visitors.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Enfield Highway, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

The problems wall beds solve

A flexible room is useful as needs change. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors without giving up the floor.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

If your children go to Enfield Heights Academy or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Bedrooms in Enfield Highway: local notes

In the area around Enfield Highway, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Enfield Highway is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Enfield Highway fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Wright's Almshouses, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to Gunpowder Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Highway?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Brimsdown station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is a wall bed safe?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
