Fitted wardrobes in Greenhill

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too. If your home has storage boxes stacked under the bed and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A large number of homes around Greenhill date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

Is bespoke worth it?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Greenhill

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Greenhill?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Greenhill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Greenhill?

A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • No space in front for doors to swing

For a flat near Harrow-on-the-Hill station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at
