Pricing built-in bookshelves in Greenhill
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The internal fittings
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.
What to send when you get in touch
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
About our built-in bookshelves in Greenhill
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. People normally come to us about room for a record collection and empty alcoves that could hold books, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board alone isn’t meant for heavy loads. That matters around Greenhill, as many homes there date from 2000 onwards: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there’s no stud.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What else we make in Greenhill
Greenhill homes and built-in bookshelves
Homes built since 2000 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Greenhill, with about 22% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Greenhill. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Harrow included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Greenhill. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Saint Jerome Church of England Bilingual School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Close to Northwick Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Baptist, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Greenhill
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Greenhill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live in a flat in Greenhill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength.
How deep should bookshelves be?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. If a wall is not suitable, we’ll tell you and suggest another approach.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Allow room for the collection to grow
Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports, which helps the shelves stay straight.
Keep heavy things on low shelves.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Advice
Where other trades come in
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
