Wall beds for homes in Lea Bridge

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and storage built around a fold-down bed.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Lea Bridge date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

Bedroom storage in Lea Bridge

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Lea Bridge were built before 1919 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Lea Bridge. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Hackney is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Lea Bridge. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If you live near Millfields Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a family home near Southwold Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How it’s made

Shelves

A few open shelves beside the bed break up a run of doors.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which matters in a small room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Your questions about wall beds in Lea Bridge

Is Lea Bridge in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Lea Bridge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Do you cover homes near Clapton station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Do you need wall beds in Lea Bridge?

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

Wall beds can help with:

  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • More floor space in a studio flat

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1 mile south. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
