Window seats for your home in Lea Bridge

Is it time for window seats?

Parents often want a window seat for a child’s room, with toy storage below. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It also keeps the floor clear.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • A recess under the window doing nothing

For an older house near St Matthew, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Window seats in Lea Bridge

Each window seat is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Lea Bridge. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and needing more storage in the room.

With a large share of homes around Lea Bridge built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Storage in Lea Bridge homes: local notes

About 46% of the homes in the area around Lea Bridge went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Lea Bridge. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Southwold Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Sutton House, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Let us know about parking near your home

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Dry any water on the paint promptly.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. A seat made for your window can use the full width and depth of the bay or recess, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
