Loft storage in Lea Bridge: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Lea Bridge, with about 16% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Lea Bridge is within about a quarter of a mile of the Lea Bridge Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 46% of homes in the neighbourhood around Lea Bridge were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Loft conversions are common in London terraces, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings that storage can use; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

Close to Millfields Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to Clapton station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthew, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Lea Bridge is about 3 miles south-west of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. From period terraces to newer flats in Lea Bridge, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Lea Bridge is one of the places in Hackney where we make loft storage.

In E5, E10 and E9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Loft storage in Lea Bridge: what you get

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Lea Bridge, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Typical reasons to get in touch are unused space in a dormer and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Lea Bridge built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

How we price loft storage

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Questions from Lea Bridge

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lea Bridge?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live in a flat in Lea Bridge. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Electrical work in the loft
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting works for loft storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. It starts with a few details from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
