Mill Meads Under-Stairs Storage

In Mill Meads, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. We design your under-stairs cupboard at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit

If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a drawer stops running smoothly, drop us a line using the contact form and describe it.

About our under-stairs storage in Mill Meads

Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, whether that’s pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. For a home in Mill Meads, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are coats and shoes piling up in the hall and a low corner too deep to reach into.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Mill Meads built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Mill Meads?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them at the measuring visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

Boards, parts and paint

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. You choose the colour.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Fitted storage in Mill Meads

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Mill Meads were built since 2000 (about 56%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 47 entries within half a mile of the centre of Mill Meads. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 8% of homes around Mill Meads were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So the walls behind under-stairs cupboards here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live near Bob's Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Tide Mill (known As the House Mill), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

What affects the price in Mill Meads

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Where you live, with the postcode

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
