About our bespoke kitchens in Mill Meads
Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. People usually come to us about tall larder storage and room for everything in the kitchen, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Kitchens in newer homes often face onto a balcony door or a large window, which leaves fewer walls for cabinets. With many homes around Mill Meads built since 2000, tall units and an island or peninsula can make up the difference. Wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or with fixings made for the board.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.
Preparing the room
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
We use plinths and adjustable feet to level the units on a sloping floor. Scribe strips follow the wall.
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.
How we price bespoke kitchens
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- The width and height of the space
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The number of doors and drawers
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Before the design visit
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Looking after your furniture
These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help before and after fitting:
- Deal with damp walls first
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Mill Meads
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ham station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
