Alcove units for your home in Millwall

How we make alcove units for Millwall

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting. These details are settled when we visit. If you’re living with units that sit well with original features and tired cupboards in the alcoves, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many homes around Millwall were built since 2000, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. We plan alcove units around the existing sockets and aerial points, with routes for cables designed in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things, from paperbacks to tall art books. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff, strong and grips screws firmly, which makes it a good choice for shelves and carcasses. You can paint its layered edge or leave it on show.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Living-room carpentry in Millwall: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Millwall were built since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 23 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Millwall. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and alcove units can be designed to work around them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Millwall is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. Pricing alcove units in Millwall

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Deptford station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

My home in Millwall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop.

What prompts alcove units in Millwall

Moving into a period house often prompts it. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are the natural place for it. It’s easier to do before the room fills with boxes.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Alcoves that aren’t square

If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
