About fitted wardrobes in SE8
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about too little room for clothes and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
Quotes in SE8
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Why householders in SE8 choose us
- We work across all London boroughs
- Designed for the room you have
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Landmarks near New Cross
Our area takes in the homes around Laban Centre, Fordham Park and St. Paul's and the streets around them. Nearby too are Myatt Garden Primary School (less than half a mile south-east), Addey and Stanhope School (close by, under half a mile north-east), Wickham Arms (less than half a mile south) and St James's Church (close by, under half a mile north-west). Green spaces nearby include New Cross Gate Cutting.
Bedroom storage across SE8
Many older bedrooms across SE8 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
Homes built since 2000 make up about 34% of the housing in the SE8 postcode district, with about 26% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Around a third of the homes in the SE8 postcode district (about 34%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 60% of households in the SE8 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in SE8 is planned beforehand.
New Cross: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Fordham Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house, and are planned to suit it.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
Where other trades come in
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
Tips worth knowing
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.
Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Questions from SE8
Where is the furniture made?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How do I get started?
The first step is to use our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.
